All You Need To Know About the Use of UV Light

UV Light

It’s important to understand the use of UV light so you can protect yourself from the damage they cause. The wavelengths of UV rays are too short for the human eye to see. UVA, UVB, UVC—there are three types of UV light. But they are not the same.

UVA vs UVB vs UVC

UVA

UVA ultraviolet radiation has a wavelength of 400-320nm. It is the most common ultraviolet radiation from the sun and penetrates the deepest, with 95% of UVA passing through the Earth’s atmosphere.

Natural UVA rays can penetrate the middle layers of the skin, causing tans, spots, or wrinkles. Use a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher to block UVA rays from entering the skin.

UVB

UVB radiation ranges from 280 to 315nm. Most of it is absorbed by the ozone layer, but about 5% of UVB still penetrates the ozone layer and reaches the ground.

UVB is the culprit for burning the skin (UVA does not cause burns). It is especially harmful to the eyes, damaging the cornea and lens. However, treated glass can also block UVB rays.

Artificial UVC

The UVC range in a vacuum is between 40nm and 280nm. However, all forms of UVC radiation that humans are exposed to are artificial, because the sun’s UVC is completely absorbed by stratospheric ozone and does not reach the earth’s surface.

Artificial UVC wavelengths are generally 100-280 nm and are mainly used for sterilization. UVC rays are particularly harmful to the eyes. Never look directly at a UVC source.

Use of UV Light to Kill Bacteria and Viruses

How UVC LED Strips Works

UVC at 200-280 nm is traditionally known as germicidal UV light. It has the ability to kill bacteria, viruses, mold and fungi.

UVA at 320-400 nm and UVB at 280-320 nm cause protein and lipid oxidation, which can lead to cell death.

How does UV light kill bacteria and viruses?

When emitted at a specific wavelength for a specific amount of time, UVC light damages the genetic material (DNA or RNA) in bacteria and viruses, inhibiting their ability to replicate and causing a breakdown in their normal cellular functions.

The Use of UV Light

1. Pipeline Leak Detection
Uses: Detecting special gases, industrial maintenance.

2. Fluorescent Flaw Detection
Uses: Detecting grease, curing glue, identifying flaws in materials.

3. Criminal Investigation
Uses: Bloodstain detection, fingerprint and hair examination.

4. Equipment Cleaning
Uses: Biological trace detection, medical aesthetics.

Applications of UV LED Lights

5. Medical Beauty
Uses: Tooth and nail curing, various cosmetic applications.

6. Identification of Antiques
Uses: Verification of jade, ancient calligraphy, and painting authenticity.

7. Biological Research
Uses: Hunting for treasure, mineral exploration.

8. Tobacco and Alcohol Authentication
Uses: Banknote, invoice, and document inspection.

Precautions for Use of UV Light

Almost all UV light equipment has warning labels. Before purchasing and using UV light equipment, be sure to understand the precautions for using and handling these products. For example, the warning below.

UV Radiation Warning: UV LEDs emit strong UV radiation, which can be harmful.

Avoid Direct Eye Exposure: Do not look directly into UV LED light to prevent eye damage.

Wear Protective Gear: Use protective eyewear to prevent inadequate exposure.

Label Warnings: If UV LEDs are used in devices, add warning labels to inform users.

Limit Skin Exposure: Avoid prolonged UV exposure to skin or other tissue.

Child Safety: Keep UV LEDs out of children’s reach.

Pet and Livestock Precautions: Protect pets and other living organisms from UV exposure.

Specifications: Be aware that product specifications and dimensions may change.

UV LED light has a longer service life and higher reliability than traditional mercury lamps. We should correctly understand the benefits and precautions of the use of LED light.
